Sometime in 2002, one year after AB250 Newborn Hearing Screening was implemented in Nevada, Corrine and I had an opportunity to speak to a group of parents whose children were newly diagnosed with hearing loss. At the end of the meeting a mother walked up with a newborn in her arms. "Thank you for your sharing. Because of the screening they detected my baby's hearing loss. As a mom, I feel we can now move for what's best for our child," she said. Corrine responded, "What's your baby's name?" The mom smiled and said, "Her name is Grace". This would be the first baby we would meet as a result of Nevada's Newborn Hearing Screening law. This would also be the beginning of our relationship with the Gutierrez Family and Grace. Today, Gracie is 13 years old, a Bi-lateral Cochlear Implant recipient, who with a lot of hard work has listening and speaking skills. She is an above average student, a Cheerleader, loves sports, plays soccer and volleyball. Did I mention, Gracie also wrestles! And I don't mean with her brothers but, with her school wrestling team. Gracie doesn't live in Nevada anymore but, she came back to visit us and be part of AG Bell Nevada Chapter 2015 Charity Bowling Event. She is one of the children with hearing loss, at this event, to receive her very own bowling ball, bag, and shoes. Wait there's more. We found out Gracie knits hats and donates them to a hospital in her town. These are not ordinary hats - they are knitted hats for premature newborn babies. A pretty special undertaking for this petite 13 year old teen, who wears a size two bowling shoe, wrestles the toughest of the tough, makes a choice to advance listening and spoken language for individuals with hearing loss and who's name is Grace.
